Cleveland Elementary School Shooting

A little after 8 a.m on Monday, Jan. 29, 1979, parents in San Carlos, a pleasant suburb of the California seaside city of San Diego, started...

I Don’t like Mondays

Brenda Spencer

As the original story goes... The news of the shooting was on the radio and the Boomtown Rats lead singer, Bob Geldof was driving down the road. He asked for the teletype machine printouts when they arrived at an Atlanta radio station. This story later changes to Los Angeles and at the Colombia Records HQ.

Geldof was desperate to crack the U.S. market and Columbia Records had already suggested they write songs Americans would understand.“You need to write something that’s going to resonate in this country”, Rappaport from Columbia Records told them.

Using direct quotes from Wiegand’s phone conversations, the band quickly wrote the song ‘I Don’t like Mondays’. The Boomtown Rats’ first two shows in the USA just happened to be in San Diego the following month. They made no mistake in capitalizing after the event with their new song.

Over the years, Geldof has told many variations of these events and was later sued for half the proceeds from sales by co-writer Johnnie Fingers. The sum was unreleased but was thought to be more than a million.

The song was protested but was released for maximum exposure by coinciding with Brenda's court hearings that October. The bands next show in San Diego was cancelled because of poor ticket sales. The song only briefly reached No73 on the billboard charts after selling millions in Europe and Australia.

Geldof later said he was sad to have made Brenda famous and that she had written to him thanking him for it. Brenda was very clear when she told me this is not true. She has never written to Bob Geldof and is not a fan of the song.

Geldof later went on to raise millions for African with Band Aid and Live Aid. He incorrectly calls himself Sir Bob after an honorary knight hood from the queen.

Lyrics: I Don't Like Mondays - 1979
The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody's gonna go to school today
She's gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn't understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
I wanna shoot the whole day down
The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
Her mother feels so shocked, father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet sixteen, ain't that peachy keen
Now it ain't so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reasons do you need, oh oh oh oh?
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
I wanna shoot the whole day down
Down, down, shoot it all down
And all the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with the toys a while
And school's out early and soon we be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles and the captain tackles
With the problems and the hows and whys
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die, oh oh oh?
The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody's gonna go to school today
She's gonna make them stay at home
And daddy doesn't understand it
He always said she was good as gold
And he can see no reasons
'Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be shown?
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like
I don't like
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like
I don't like
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
(Tell me why)
I don't like Mondays
I wanna shoot the whole day down
